My First-Hand Experience with Summer Camp Safety: Why JEPP is Essential for Jewish Camps

Writer: Yoni AriYoni Ari

I’ve been around summer camps for years, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that anything can happen. You plan for sunny days, campfire songs, and late-night chats, but in reality, unexpected things pop up—storms roll in, a kid gets hurt on a hike, or worse, there’s a real security threat. I’ve seen camps that handled these situations smoothly, and I’ve seen others where panic took over. The difference? Training. Being prepared isn’t just a nice idea; it’s what keeps everyone safe.

Last summer, I visited a camp that had just completed JEPP’s emergency preparedness training. During my visit, an unexpected thunderstorm rolled in while campers were on a hike. Instead of panic, I saw well-trained counselors take charge, guiding the campers to safety with confidence. Every child made it back safely because the staff knew what to do. That moment reinforced for me how vital customized emergency preparedness training is for Jewish camps.

Why Jewish Camps Need Specialized Training

Too many camps rely solely on security companies, thinking that hiring guards is enough. Others bring in dry, boring lectures on safety that fail to engage their staff in real-life emergency response. But when a crisis happens, it’s the counselors and staff on the ground who need to know how to react, manage the situation, and lead effectively. That’s why JEPP’s hands-on, customized emergency preparedness training is a game-changer.

Jewish summer camps face risks beyond typical outdoor safety concerns. From medical emergencies to active threats and security incidents, we must ensure that our camps are prepared for anything. That’s where JEPP comes in.

  1. Understanding the Unique Needs of Jewish Camps

    • Jewish camps are not just summer programs—they are places of cultural and religious identity. Unfortunately, that means they can be targeted. JEPP provides training tailored to the specific security concerns Jewish camps face.

  2. Counselors as First Responders

    • In an emergency, camp counselors are the first line of defense. JEPP equips them with the skills they need to assess situations, manage group safety, and coordinate with first responders.

  3. Managing High-Stress Situations

    • Emergencies can trigger fear and confusion, but proper training helps ensure calm, organized decision-making. JEPP’s training incorporates crisis psychology to help staff guide campers through stressful situations effectively.
